Applying US child passport and no birth certificate for parents.

Caller: My husband went through the naturalization process recently and we are US citizens now, our son was born in India, so we wanted to apply for his N600, so what is the process for that?

A: Where is your son?
Caller: He is here he has a GC he is ten years old.
So he is already a US citizen right now, you can just apply for his passport you don’t need the N-600. Do you need the certificate?

Caller: So what is happening is so for the passport when we went to the post office is they needed is original or what is called certified birth certificate and certified marriage certificate, we do have the copies here but we do not have the originals with us.

A: Ok, you might want to get the originals from India, but your son is already a US citizen, its just a matter of getting him the passport, apply for the N-600 they will ask you for the same thing anyway, and N-600 is useless usually, because there is no purpose really to use that, just go ahead and file the passport, and go to another post office because usually they just ask for the certificate and proof that this is your son, they should not give you such a hard time, another way to do it just make a call to the state department of passport office in San Francisco in the bay area and get an appointment with them, they might be able to issue it to you right away.

Caller: Ok, is there any other way like affidavit or anything that is needed if I cannot produce the certificate because they are calling it a certified birth certificate, does that mean original?

A: Yes, what they want is to see the original. They just come up with all kinds of rule each post office so my advice just go straight to the USCIS office with his GC they might be able to trace him right there and give him his Passport don’t get too stressed over it because he is already a US citizen its just a matter of getting his passport, ok.
